About the Artist- Sonya Walker
|
Sonya Walker, a native Savannah, Georgia demonstrated a keen interest in drawing at the young age of six. As a very quiet and shy child, she used drawing as a way of occupying her time. After high school she went on to pursue her education in art by attending the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), where she majored in Illustration. After a year of study, she decided to withdraw and pursue her art career. In 1989, Ms. Walker became an Associate Artist with J.P. Art Enterprise on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Joe Pinckney, owner and operator of the business is an Artist as well. While working with Mr. Pinckney, Sonya has exhibited at Valdosta State College in Valdosta, Ga., The People’s Theatre Gallery in Milwaukee, WI. And the Gullah festival in Beaufort, SC. Sonya found new direction with her work when she joined forces with two local artists, Napoleon Wilkerson and Ogbonna Mossi. Together they formed the collaborative called “Creative Mind Images”. The three came together to express a common interest through the medium of art. Motivated by issues that affect the African American community, the threesome knew that there was power in numbers. They realized that images influence our thinking, so they wanted to address social, political, spiritual, economical and many other issues through the medium of art. Sonya has proven that persistence pays off. Just to name a few accomplishments; a one woman show at Tuskegee University, Tuskegee, AL.; Savannah State University, Savannah, GA..; Lucy Laney Museum, Augusta, GA.; Harriet Tubman Museum, Macon, GA.; Rollins College, Orlando, FL.; African American Atelier, Durham, NC.; and other cities including Chicago, IL; Atlanta, GA.; and Minneapolis, MN Sonya has participated in several festivals in 1992,1994,1996, 1998, and 2006: The National Black Arts Festival in Atlanta, GA. She was also excepted in the Detroit Festival of the Arts, Detroit, MI.; Bethesda Row Arts Festival, Rockville, MA.; and the Gullah Festival, Beaufort, SC. She was featured in the 1992 August/September issue of American Visions Magazine where she was named one of eight up-and-coming Artists. Her work is in the collection of Susan Taylor, former Editor-n-Chief of Essence Magazine; Gladys Knight; Shaun Stockman (Boys II Men); Actress/Producer Debbie Allen; Actress Barbara O.; Shirley Childress-Saxton (Sweet Honey in the Rock).
